Choosing a warehouse rack beam is not only a matter of matching a profile name. The clear span between uprights and the total load placed on each beam level work together. As the span increases, the same beam profile generally supports less load, so both values must be considered before requesting a quotation.

1. Confirm the clear beam span

Measure the usable horizontal distance required between the two upright frames. This is the beam span, not the overall length of the complete rack row. Allow enough room for the pallets, cartons, or shelves and the operating clearance required by your handling method.

2. Calculate the total load per level

Add the maximum weight of everything stored on one beam level. For pallet racking, include all pallets on that level, the goods, and the pallets themselves. Do not use only an average weight when a heavier regular load may be stored there.

3. Compare beam profiles at the required span

Beam height, width, steel thickness, section shape, connector design, and manufacturing quality all affect performance. A longer span may require a deeper or heavier profile even when the intended load remains unchanged. Profile dimensions from different manufacturers should not be treated as interchangeable without verification.

4. Use the Beam Capacity Selector

Our Warehouse Rack Beam Capacity Selector lets you enter the required span and load per level, then compares them with Steely Metal’s available beam data. It provides a practical starting point and can identify suitable options quickly without searching through a large capacity table.

5. Confirm the complete rack design

A beam recommendation is only one part of a storage system. Upright capacity, frame height, number of levels, floor condition, anchoring, bracing, seismic or local code requirements, load distribution, and forklift operation must also be reviewed. Final specifications should be confirmed for the actual project before purchase or installation.

Calculation basis of the Beam Capacity Selector

The selector uses Steely Metal's supplied table of theoretical loads per rack level for Q235 steel under uniformly distributed loading. These values are not capacities for a single beam, physical load-test results, or certified working-load ratings. For unlisted lengths, the tool uses the next longer span listed in the table without interpolation. It is a preliminary comparison, not a structural calculation or approval of the complete rack.

Material, load basis, and theoretical calculation status confirmed by Steely Metal on 3 October 2026. Final rack design must be reviewed for the actual project.
